I was always told that it's a bit of a gamble to book a trip to see the Northern Lights.

But this year, if NASA has got it right, they will be at their most spectacular and shining at their brightest levels for 50 years.

While travel editor of the News of the World, I sent a few colleagues to the Arctic Circle for the greatest light show on earth but never went myself. Stupid or what!

The closest I got was watching the BBC comedy drama Lapland on Christmas Eve when ageing mother Eileen (Sue Johnston) took her whole family to track down Santa. Viewers were treated to an amazing Northern Lights display that would tempt anyone to go.

Transun has a range of breaks where you can enjoy an exhilarating snowmobile, husky, or reindeer safari, travelling deep into Europe’s last unspoilt wilderness in search of the lights.

The three, four or seven-night Arctic Spirit Northern break from Gatwick, Manchester, Bristol, East Midlands, Glasgow and Leeds Bradford runs until April with prices from £749. Visit or call 01865 265200.
