IF you can, get over to the States before Christmas or even in the New Year - the sales are amazing.

I was in New York last weekend and shopped 'til I dropped and just wish I could have brought back two extra suitcases and had more than the £390 duty free allowance.

Stores at Woodbury Common Premium Outlets, 45-minutes north of the Big Apple, always have great deals, but prices were slashed by half or more.

And because we are getting $1.55 to the £, we save even more.

Clothes, shoes and electrical goods were going for a song. Thousands crammed the outlets for Midnight Madness - where stores open through the night and into Black Friday, the day after Thanksgiving and the official start of Christmas shopping.

The event is almost like a celebration but that's the American style. Traditional holidays are turned into one big party.

I took a package with Virgin Holidays and stayed at the Westin Times Square which is very handy for everything you want to do in Manhattan.

It's within easy reach of Fifth Avenue for more shopping and Broadway.
